It’s Made to Sound So Simple Yet It’s So Difficult

We have all been told that the only things you need to do to lose weight are to eat healthy and exercise.  If only it were that easy!  While these are effective tools in any weight loss program there are times they are not enough or simply not possible to the degree needed to achieve your healthy weight.  A lot of times we just need a jump start to get the ball rolling in the right direction.  Some people have injuries or limitations that inhibit the amount of exercise necessary to achieve effective weight loss.  Dieting also creates significant challenges as they are often not sustainable, or we experience a moment of weakness that ultimately brings the whole diet and any progress made crashing to the ground.

Then there are people that diet and exercise regularly but are just not able to get where they want to be weight wise. There are many factors that can influence one’s ability to lose weight effectively. Some problems that can inhibit weight loss include the following: insulin resistance, thyroid problems, certain prescription medications (antidepressants), food allergies, hormonal imbalances, and poor genetics, just to name a few. One factor that I want to talk about in more detail is insulin resistance.

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance occurs when sugar from our diet enters our bloodstream.  This triggers our body (pancreas) to release a hormone called insulin.  Insulin then travels to the cells to take in the sugar that is now in our blood stream.  With insulin resistance, the cells do not allow the insulin to take in the sugar.  The pancreas reacts by increasing more insulin to absorb the sugar in the cells.  The sugars are not being effectively broken down by the insulin which leads to elevated sugar in the bloodstream and increased insulin production by the pancreas.  If enough insulin resistance develops, we can develop type 2 diabetes.

How does insulin resistance contribute to weight gain?

When there is excess insulin and blood sugar in our blood stream, our body responds by putting the excess sugar into storage.  Some of the sugar can be stored in the liver or muscles but much of the excess sugar is stored as fat.  This, of course, leads to weight gain.

How to combat insulin resistance?

While diet and exercise can improve insulin resistance it is often not enough, and we get stuck in a viscous cycle.  Weight gain increases insulin resistance making it harder to exercise effectively which leads to more weight gain.  Dieting becomes difficult and often discouraging.  We frequently see people who have been exercising and dieting and can’t break the cycle of insulin resistance.  In these instances, we often recommend a class of medication called GLP-1.  This class of medication helps the cells accept the insulin so that it can break down the circulating sugars to be used for energy as opposed to stored as fat.  The benefit of this class of medication not only decreases insulin resistance, but they are also great at reducing appetite and making us feel full for a longer period
